Call for Entries: Context 2019

Filter Photo is pleased to announce Context 2019, our annual spring open call for lens-based work. This year the exhibition will be juried by Ariel Pate, Assistant Curator of Photography, Milwaukee Art Museum.

Context 2019 will open March 22, 2019, at Filter Space and will remain open through April 27, 2019. A juror’s choice award and an honorable mention will be awarded. The juror’s choice comes with a $500 cash prize.

The cost to submit to Context 2019 is $35.00 for up to five entries. All types of photographic and lens-based work will be considered, including short videos (maximum 5 minutes). You may submit any combination of images or video links, up to a total of five.

About the Juror

Ariel Pate is the Assistant Curator of Photography at the Milwaukee Art Museum. She was a Curatorial Assistant at the Art Institute of Chicago in the Department of Photography and worked with Medtronic’s corporate art collection. Recent projects include the Art Institute’s Alfred Stieglitz Collection: Photographs website (2016). She holds an M.A. in Curatorial Studies from the J.W. Goethe University and Staedelschule in Frankfurt, Germany.



Juror and curator Ariel Pate will consider all types of photographic work for this fifth annual survey exhibition of contemporary photography.  This open theme allows for the widest understanding of the medium and current photographic practices. She is open to all interpretations and will accept photography and video.

Call Extended: January 19 – Deadline for Submissions

Early February – Entrants are notified of juror’s decision

March 11 – Accepted work must arrive at the gallery – 2D work must be framed

March 22 – Exhibition Opens

March 29, 6 – 9 pm – Public Reception

April 27 – Exhibition Closes
