Publishing your work in book form can be a rewarding experience, but it can also be fraught with confusion and stress. In this one-day workshop with artist Carolyn Drake, participants will take a deep dive into the creative, conceptual, and practical aspects of photo book publishing. The workshop will begin with a close reading of a selection of existing, carefully crafted books, and consider questions like: What ways have photographers used the book form to enhance or transform the meaning of their work? How can you draw inspiration from existing books and apply it to your own? At what point do you approach publishers? How much design or text does your work require?

Drake will also share her experiences with the six books she has published, from the highlights and disasters of self-publishing to the benefits and challenges of working with established publishers.

What to bring:

  • 20-60 cheaply printed photographs, plus outtakes if possible (can be in digital form)

  • These can be from a single project or several.

  • It doesn’t have to be a finished project - works in progress are okay.

This workshop is limited to 15 participants.

Carolyn Drake works on photo-based projects seeking to interrogate dominant historical narratives and creatively reimagine them.  Her practice embraces collaboration and has in recent years melded photography with sewing, collage, and sculpture. She has published five photo books and is the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship, the Henri Cartier Bresson Award, and a Fulbright fellowship, among other prizes. She lives in Vallejo, California and is represented by Yancey Richardson Gallery and Magnum Photos. Her sixth book, I'll Let You Be In My Dreams If I Can Be In Yours, is co-authored with Andres Gonzalez and will be released by Mack Books in September 2024.
